Nature or Nurture

A thunderstorm rolled through the forest in Borneo after threatening to  rain for hours, the way it does in Borneo, fast, heavy and then gone in minutes. The mother orangutan didn't retreat. She reached up, pulled down a canopy of broad leaves as a makeshift umbrella over her and her infant's heads.

Was this nature doing what nature does? Maybe. But as I watch her adjust and readjust the leaves, it looked like something closer to a nurturing instinct.

Maybe that's the answer to the question in the title: it's both. Nature gave her the leaf. Nurture is what she did with it.
